The patio is the slab you live on. It carries the table, the barbecue and the traffic from the back door, and it sits hard against the house, which means its fall and its finish matter more than anywhere else in the yard. On Boroondara’s rebuilt and extended period homes it also has to negotiate what is already there: decking off the new living room, original paving, established trees, and a boundary fence closer than any concrete truck would like.
Falls, levels and the house
Every patio is set out from the house down. The fall is directed away from the wall, the slab meets door thresholds and existing decking or paving at a clean level, and where the yard falls back towards the house, a grated drain is formed into the edge of the pour. Boroondara’s clay moves with the seasons, so the base is compacted and a membrane goes down where required, and near established trees the slab edge is detailed around the root zone rather than through it. Coloured and exposed finishes for outdoor living
Exposed aggregate is the standout alfresco surface: the stone grips when wet, hides leaf stains, and ties into an exposed aggregate driveway or path at the front so the block reads as one build. Coloured concrete brings the slab into the palette of the house, with full depth oxide colour that cannot wear off: bone and sandstone tones sit against red brick and weatherboard, charcoal frames a rendered extension, and a mid grey stays cooler underfoot than a dark slab in summer. A broom finished plain slab does the same structural job for less.
